Dr. C. Everett Koop
Former U.S. Surgeon General
Dr. C. Everett Koop was the recipient of the 1998 Leadership Award. Dr. Koop served as U.S. Surgeon General from 1981 to 1989. He received his M.D. in 1947 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained to teach and practice medicine. He was named Professor of Pediatric Surgery in 1959 and Professor of Pediatrics in 1971. In 1948, he became Surgeon-in-Chief of Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, where he served until 1981.
The recipient of numerous honors and awards, including 37 honorary doctorates, Dr. Koop was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995.
The author of hundreds of articles and books on medicine and biomedical ethics, Dr. Koop continues to educate the public through his speaking, television appearances, and work with numerous health and civic organizations. He is an Adviser to the Center for Public Justice.
